The Heros of Legacy have returned from a world drenched in the evils of Necromancy, to a world where they are thought long dead. Guild to practice your trade. Gain influence with other Houses and Guilds to pull in favors!

CARPS June 27-29
As the summer's heat encroaches, the heroes of Phantara struggle to free themselves from a plane of existence sapped of nearly all of it's essence power by the evil necromancers who rule it. Will they find the "keys" out of the dying realm in time to escape the Necromancer's clutches? Will they be able to save the few people of the "Dead World" who have managed to evade being captured and sucked dry of their very life force?

Take this opportunity to play one of Michigan's longest-running boffer LARPs. Immerse yourself in the rich, fully developed fantasy world of Phantara. Choose among elves, dwarves, humans, guthrie (halfling), gnomes, valkin-vi (a race close to human), orcs or avayanna (bird men). A vast array of point-bought skills let you custom tailor your character to exactly what you want to be. Don't be stuck in a "class;" be a Warrior who can pick locks, scroll cast, and make your own healing potions! Be a Mage who can hide in the deepest of shadows for

Why boffer swordfighting is better than...

Football: In football, you grab a ball and run away as fast as you can. We don't run away, we face our opponent head on!

Wrestling: It doesn't matter how much or how little you weigh, and you don't have to wear tights (unless you really want to).

Golf: Does this need explaining?

Hockey: Hitting someone with a stick in hockey is punished. In our sport, we encourage it!

Video games: Anybody can push a button to swing a sword. Wouldn't you rather do it yourself?

Renaissance festivals: Why sit on the sidelines and watch when you can live it?

Role-playing games: It's far less satisfying to roll dice than to smack someone with a stick.

Watching movies: See Renaissance festivals.

Cheerleading: See golf.

Maethodoron: Fighters of the Oak
It was a bright, crisp March afternoon. A gentle breeze bristled through the leafless trees, which almost appeared to be a harbinger for the chaos to come. A heavy snowfall from the day before lay on the ground, and the cloudless sky provided sunlight that was completely blinding for the first few minutes the warriors were on the field. As their feet trudged through the virgin snow, the white flakes soon turned to a slushy brown, almost as if they meant to violate the peaceful calm of the crystallized water that lay about.

Two warriors, Alexandru and Lucius, stood side by side with their swords and shields as Moyare positioned himself between them with his spear. Across from the three warriors stood Menelwyn, a brave young woman who took up a spear for the first time. At her side was Mercaine, with Adovan opposite to him, both bearing swords and shields.

As the horn sounded, a flock of birds fled from what was to be the final glorious moment for all of the soldiers on the field. After several volleys back and forth from the spear bearers, Lucius and Adovan had both lost use of their legs due to devastating spear thrusts to their shins. The battle raged on; Moyare would thrust his spear at Menelwyn, and Mercaine would bash the shaft away from his comrades, deflecting serious blows. As Moyare was recovering, Menelwyn would thrust back, taking his arm. Not to be outdone, Moyare fights back furiously, thrusting and dodging until he beats back his foe, tiring his opponents and slaying Adovan.

Menelwyn fought furiously against a foe twice her size, but lost footing and was slain. Araduin took up her spear and battled in her place, slaying Lucius with a thrust of his spear into his chest.

After many volleys back and forth, the two spearmen, Moyare and Araduin, battled while their shieldmen Alexandru and Mercaine, did their best to defend their respective comrades. Araduin thrusted at Moyare; Alexandru deflected his shot, and recovered before Mercaine could claim his life. Not content with resting against a foe fresh in the battle, Moyare fought back valiantly, taking his opponent's leg, dropping Araduin to his knees. Araduin threw a shot back at him, which was deflected by Alexandru with his shield. As his shield was raised, however, Mercaine slashed violently at his lower half, taking his leg. Araduin threw a shot at Moyare, taking his left leg, but as Moyare was dropping, he thrusted his spear into Araduin's heart, sending him to the fields of Valhalla to join Lucius, Menelwyn, and Adovan. However, before his spear could be withdrawn from Araduin's corpse, Mercaine grabbed Moyare's spear and pulled him forward, dropping him to the ground and slaying him by leaving a gash in his back. Alexandru struck back at Mercaine before he could recover and hacked his leg, dropping Mercaine to the ground. A violent battle ensued between the two legless warriors, both swinging away at each other to no avail. Finally, in one final moment, both warriors wrapped their swords around their opponent's backs, killing each other. As they both dropped to the ground, letting out a final death groan, the field of battle fell silent. It was over.

A bird returned to the field. It danced among the branches of the trees, barely noticing the scene of death that lay below. It began snowing again, lightly covering the battlefield with a fresh coat of white, which had turned from a muddy brown to red with the blood of the fallen warriors. The deafening silence of the battlefield stood in contrast from the slaughter that had preceded it. It was over. Maethodoron still stands. Long live Maethodoron!

Hi
Hey Everyone,

After a long hiatus, I have decided to rejoin the Larping community and was wondering if I could get some good hints and tips. I've already done a little research on how to build boffers (curtosy of SOLAR) general manners and such. But what I'm really looking for here is more practical advise. i have only played once or twice to be honest. Does anyone know of any gaming communities in Ohio? Preferably around the Springfield/Dayton area?

The even is going to be help March 5th from 4:00 PM until 9:30 isk PM. To enter the event is only $7. But there are a LOT of different types of combat going on (all boffer), some one on ones, others are team.
There are going to be prizes AND…. FREE FOOD……

If anything it is for a good cause and you get a chance to fight against people from different groups with different styles.

Guard Up! A review.
Well I had a wonderful time at Guard Up in Burlington Mass. While I didn’t learn any new techniques, this is the first week that I have been sore in quite some time, and I had a great. I do think they took it a bit easy on my first night, and kept to those things which offered more fun. It was definitely a good continuation, a good practice. There was ample challenge, also a friendly environment, not so much about competition as learning.

At about $20 a week, it’s not as expensive as it first sounds (although there is a $150 registration fee), and for me the commute is not a problem (Burlington MA). Attending twice a week means your paying a trained instructor $10 an hour for their time. With a LARP style night on Mondays, and Historic combat training Wednesday/Thursday night there is plenty of reason to want to attend two nights a week. You never have to buy a weapon ever. They provide weapons, from a company called Actionflex, and kickboxing bags to serve as shields. At the permission of the insturctor you may also bring your own shields, mostly all foam are passed (lucky me, as my sheild is entirely constructed of foam).

They also offer classic fencing, and provide everything from rapiers to helmets. Armored combat class looks more like motorcycle riders dismounted, but gets into grappeling, pommel hits, blade grabs, and all the really fun stuff in the ancient medievel fighting texts that you don't get to do otherwise. There are other advanced classes as well for the truely devoted, and even martial arts classes.

I found the huge supply of Sport Sword line of weapons to be good quality, sturdy, and also safe. In my opinion slightly on the whippy side due to a light construction. The weapons are easily felt and heard without too much effort. Both 'lightest touch' and 'solid tap' are possible but most blows end up on the lower end of the scale due to weapon design.

It is something that I would sign up for in a heartbeat if budget were no issue. Even with budget as an issue, it’s more than tempting. As I don’t particularly enjoy “the gym”, this to me is a much better option than paying to run in place while watching television. Sure I don’t get any strength training, but my cardio is all taken care of.

Check them out at www.guardup.com
